Ban all petrol cars say Lib Dems
If the Liberal Democrats have their way all petrol cars will be banned by 2040. The radical proposals were announced today by party leader Sir Menzies Campbell, and environment spokesman Chris Huhne as part of a scheme to make the Britain carbon neutral by 2050. Mr Huhne wants to see hydrogen fuel cell powered cars and predicts there will be other new technologies which will replace petrol engines. He compared the changes to the move from steam to internal combustion engines at the start of the 20th century. Their ten point plan also commits to 100% non nuclear, carbon-free generation by 2050, and a green tax aimed specifically on those who pollute the most.
The Lib Dems want to see at least 30% of our power coming from clean, non-carbon emitting sources by 2020, ahead of their 2050 targets. They also want to install a high speed rail network, which would be funded by tolls on lorries using motorways, and introduce 'green mortgages'.
Mr Huhne said that the party's plans were "the first and only realistic route march for change. This ambitious objective for zero-carbon Britain would put us in the global lead in tackling climate chaos along with Sweden, Norway and New Zealand," he said. "Just as crucially, we have set out plans that are the first attempt of any British political party to tackle carbon emissions from every part of the economy: transport, energy, housing, offices and factories. The time for talk has passed; we need action."

Banning them by 2040 is hardly radical. That's in more than 30 years
