Great Global warming swindle was dangerous propaganda. Yay or nay?

global-warming.jpgI could almost hear a collective sigh of relief as news emerged yesterday of a 'conclusive' study showing that sun activity cannot be responsible for modern day climate change.

The findings are in direct opposition to the claims made in controversial Channel 4 documentary The Great Global Warming swindle, which challenged the theory that humans are responsible for climate change due to C02 emissions. As many uninformed viewers were taken in by the documentary, those in the know were furious at Channel 4 for presenting the argument against man-made climate change in such a convincing way without checking its facts first; facts which have later been shown to be tenuous and unsound. Even those appearing in the programme claimed their words had been deliberately twisted and one described it as being 'as close to pure propaganda as anything since World War Two'

The question is, do you agree that this programme can be called 'propaganda'? Do you believe it has done any damage to the fight against climate change? Yay or nay.

Yay unfortunately – people will grab on to anything to justify their inability to change. There's only one Earth. Don't use it up!

Think I agree with you, Deb. I was cursing Channel 4 after this programme came out - all the people who took it seriously were precisely the people you'd expect to want an excuse to be lazy. It really made me mad.

It frustrated me at the time because I'm not a scientist myself, so felt unable to make a firm decision, but as soon as I found out the facts weren't actually sound and that people's words had been taken out of context I knew what I believed. Sadly, few people will think about it that much.

I agree with both of you. I know a fair few people who use the documentary as their "proof" that global warming isn't real. So I'm afraid it's a yay, it was propaganda and it did people people an excuse not to change their lifestyles for the planet.

I'd agree as well. I sat through the whole mess, trying very hard not to blow a blood-vessel.

The trouble is that being on television somehow gives a cause more credibility, in particular if it's seen as a "dissident" one, albeit dangerously irresponsible and false, such as that of the global warming/climate change denial industry. That concern regarding climate change has become fairly mainstream in the past few years only works in the favour of deniers and those who don't want to change their lifestyles, as they can act like the minority, and thus be subversive, in a "Help Help I'm being oppressed!" way via Monty Python. Much in the way smokers feel, for instance.

I can't recall where I read it, but someone wrote that should nothing happen after all, and we "tree huggers" are found to be wrong, the worst is that we'll just have cleaner cities and better lifestyles. If the other side is wrong, however...
