If, like me, you’re raising little vegetarians and they’re venturing out into the big wide world and wondering why other people aren’t vegetarian, or are getting comments which make them feel ‘different’, then Herb The Vegetarian Dragon is the book for you. In simple, fairytale-style language, the book tells the story of Herb, the dragon who was different from his brother dragons and was nearly killed as a result. But, in true fairytale style, this unlikely hero saved the kingdom, thus dragons and vegetarian dragons learned to live peacefully despite their differences.

Endorsed by the Vegetarian Society and Sir Paul McCartney, the story is magical, the illustrations are superbly detailed and colourful, and my little herbivores adore it. It has given them the language to be able to answer people’s questions about their diet without feeling picked on or defensive. I highly recommend it, part of the range of gorgeous books at Barefoot Books, who also publish the superb family yoga book, My Daddy is a Pretzel.
