Quarter of New York adults have elevated blood levels of mercury

One in four adults in New York has elevated levels of mercury in their blood, according to a study from New York City's Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. And high levels of fish consumption are thought to be responsible: those who eat fish three times a week or less have normal levels.

According to Daniel Kass, the Health Department's Assistant Commissioner for Environmental Surveillance and Policy:

"For most people, frequent fish consumption is not a concern. Fish is a good source of protein and heart-healthy fats, and it's low in calories and unhealthy fats. No one needs to stop eating fish, but some people may need to change the type and amount they eat."

Among those who should be concerned are pregnant women, as high mercury levels can cause future health problems for their children. To help New Yorkers make sensible choices about fish the Health Department is launching a campaign to educate them about the risks and healthy fish consumption. The "Eat Fish, Choose Wisely" brochure will be available in English, Spanish and Chinese.
