Puerto Rico urged to ban cockfighting

Cockfighting has been successfully banned in all but one US state. Now Louisiana, the last state offering refuge for this "sport", has committed to banning cockfighting in 2008. Having successfully campaigned to ban cockfighting in all US States, animal welfare groups are focusing their attention on a US territory: Puerto Rico.

In Puerto Rico, however, cockfighting is so widespread it is considered part of the local culture. In fact, the territory's legislature has protected the practice as a "cultural right" of the island's inhabitants.
According to the lawmaker who introduced the bill, Carlos Molina: "There are many people who enjoy this sport and we are not going to allow any group of people to come here and prevent that right. The sport does no damage to anyone."
But PETA intends to change this attitude, a spokesman said: "The cruel blood sport (is) illegal in every U.S. state and now it is time for Puerto Rico to follow suit."
The American Humane Society is also working to wipe out cockfighting in Puerto Rico, according to a spokesman: "We do plan to mount a campaign to appeal to the many Puerto Ricans who agree with our perspective that this practice constitutes needless cruelty."
How much success these groups will have in eradicating the sport in Puerto Rico remains to be seen.

Cockfighting has been illegal in Jamaica for a very long time. Puerto Rico should join the rest of the civilized world and follow Jamaica's fine example!
