Protect yourself if you’re jetting off to leave the floods behind

sunshineMany of us are packing to go on long-awaited summer holidays at the moment, breathing a sigh of relief to be leaving behind the rain and the floods and going to hot and sunny climes. But with the weather so miserable here, it’s easy to underestimate just how hot it can be in other countries and leave behind that all-important sun protection. Obviously, the best way to prevent burning and sun-damage to the skin is to cover up – hats and clothes – and stay out of the sun in the hottest part of the day, between 11am and 3pm, but sun cream can also form part of our repertoire of sun protection aids. And here are some great ‘green’ lotions and creams.

Green People have my personal favourite sun care products, especially the No Scent Sun Lotion SPF 22 which does the job without feeling too sticky and with no fragrances. For children, I love the No Scent Children’s Sun Lotion SPF 25 or the Lavender Children’s Sun Lotion SPF 25, both of which the children will tolerate, and the lavender scent being especially refreshing on a hot day. Green People are currently offering free postage for the first order from any household, so now is the time to order if you need to stock up.
Weleda’s Sun Lotion SPF 15 is much milkier in texture, suitable for vegans, and water-resistant which makes it another favourite of ours, although care must be taken not to spill it. Weleda have free postage on orders over £25 - easy enough to spend on their gorgeous range.
For redheads and those who need higher protection, JASON’s Sunbrella range is excellent for its Family Sunblock SPF 36 which is water-resistant, and also its Complete Block Spray SPF 26, good for those children who dislike suncream being rubbed in, or who can’t sit still long enough! JASON also do a good Lip Care SPF 20 stick – a part of the body which often catches the sun painfully and yet is forgotten from the sun protection regime.
All these products are based on natural and organic ingredients such as edelweiss, and on the protection afforded by mineral pigments, such as titanium dioxide, which sit on top of the skin reflecting the sun’s rays. None of them contain the controversial nanoparticles which are alleged to enter the skin.
