Plastic bag manufacturers fight back against Anya Hindmarch

i__maplasticbag.jpgNot that I want to give even more free advertisement space to Anya Hindmarch and her over-rated bag, but she has caused the Plastic Bag Alliance (a group of plastic bag manufacturers who advocate the use of plastic carriers as long as they are recyclable) to come out fighting. They have brought out this hideous bag which says 'I AM a plastic bag and I'm 100% recyclable', and are telling us that it's OK to use it as it won't end up in a landfill site, but down at your local council recycling facility where it will be transformed into something useful. It's sadly quite typical of the misguided attitude towards recycling, where it's deemed as acceptable to produce mountains and mountains of useless 'stuff' as long as it has those 3 little arrows on it! I think it's time we started concentrated on reducing and not just recycling.

Exactly. I am of the same opinion. Reuse and conserve. Stop the consumerism under the green cover.

Reduce, reuse, recycle... in that order! Clearly the entrenched interests would like to steer the ship in a way that suits their short-term dollar benefit. What a sad way to live. I welcome the members of the Plastic Bag Alliance to contact me for a friendly conversation about alternative opportunities they have to promote better products and perhaps to benefit by encouraging LESS consumerism.

Is there a statistic on what percentage of plastic bags are actually recycled?
