New York sues Exxon over alleged 19 year-old oil leak

New York State is suing Exxon Mobil Corp to force the company to clear up an alleged oil leak from 1978. They claim the leak contaminated Newtown Creek which runs between the boroughs of Queens and Brooklyn. According to the lawsuit there are 55 acres of underground contamination.
In addition to the clear up New York State is asking that the creek be restored and is seeking financial compensation for damages.

New York State Attorney General said: "This company cannot ignore the harm its oil spill has caused to the environment and residents of Greenpoint, Brooklyn. This suit sends the message that even the largest corporations in the world cannot escape the consequences of their misdeeds."
But Exxon Mobil claim the case is groundless, a spokesman said: "The allegations made by the New York State attorney general are not supported by the facts and are unfounded. Exxon Mobil takes its environmental responsibility very seriously, and our policy is to comply with all applicable environmental laws and regulations."
They say they will fight the lawsuit vigorously.
