L'Oreal create artificial skin to replace animal testing
Cosmetic company L'Oreal have created an artificial skin which they hope to use in place of live animals in the testing of their products. Episkin is grown from cells taken from the top layer of pieces of skin, and can be manipulated to suit the needs of the tester. It can be aged, tanned and can help determine how efficient sunscreens are on different skin tones by using cells from different ethnicities. It will probably become very popular after 2009, when animal testing is set to be banned across the EU (about time too!)
