Voracious jumbo squid are preying on local fish populations in California. The Humboldt squid can grow up to seven feet long and can weigh more than 110 pounds (that's an entire Audrey Hepburn!). They are eating their way through stocks of anchovy, hake and other commercial fish making things tough for already overstretched local fishermen.
Until the 1970s, the squid were found exclusively in the Eastern Pacific and in the coastal waters from Peru to Costa Rica. But more recently the populations of its natural predators, tuna, shark and swordfish have declined due to overfishing. Without their predators the squid's numbers increased and they moved further north finding new types of prey.
