John Lewis warms to ethical footware this summer

This summer John Lewis has gone ethical, starting with shoes. Well, I suppose you have to work bottom up in most things. New to their department stores will be Urban Thong sandals, designed to help victims of the Tsunami. Originating from Sri Lanka, the flip flops are made from 100% natural rubber, which is one of Sri Lanka’s key commodities and means they are totally recyclable. Each pair of Urban Thongs is also packaged in a bag sewn by a team of women who lost livelihoods in the disaster. Pick up a pair for £15 - £18... and there's more - click on to find out more about the one in the pic.

Also feauturing in stores will be Spanish ethical shoe manufacturer El Natura Lista. Their shoes and boots are all natural materials - the leather is dyed with vegetable extracts and tree bark, insoles are made from either a recycled carbon compound or natural and the soles are made from recycled rubber. They’re currently selling at £65. I highly recommend checking out El Natura Lista’s online shop (click link below), despite being in Spanish, it’s a really funky site.
