Isolated Tribe Threatened by Tourism

Tour operators, hotels and taxi drivers offering sightings of the Jarawa Tribe on India's Andaman Islands are being warned by the government that they are in violation of an Indian Supreme Court Order. The Order is designed to protect the Jarawa and other tribes from germs and diseases brought in from outsiders.
Stephen Corry, director of Survival (a charity supporting tribal peoples) says: "We welcome efforts to crack down on those who enter the Jarawa’s land without their permission. The Jarawa should not be treated as a tourist attraction – all interaction with outsiders is potentially lethal as it could introduce diseases to which the tribe have no immunity."
