A 1.2 MegaWatt tidal turbine, which will power around 1000 homes, is to be installed off the coast of Northern Ireland in August. The turbine, created by Marine Current Turbines, will be the world's largest ever tidal current device, and despite the fact this one is only a prototype it's thought more will be produced over the next few years. Rotors on the 'SeaGen' will only turn at 10 to 20 revs per minute which is relatively slow (a ship's propellers turn about 10 times as fast), but this will ensure sea creatures are not harmed by the huge propellers as they can easily navigate through the slow turning blades. Future turbines will be rated from around 750 to 1500 kilowatts, and will be strategically placed under the sea in groups where there are high currents.
