Sir David King, the government’s chief scientist has given his assessment of the effects of global warming to the UK. Speaking to a committee of MP’s he gave notice that the country is already experiencing climate change. We can, according to Sir David, expect extreme weather from now on, such as heat waves and torrential downpours. Whereas mainland Europe will have to deal with rising summer temperatures, we will have to deal with flash floods, something our dated infrastructure was never designed for. It will take massive investment by the government to ensure our drainage systems can deal with the change in weather over the next few years. Even with huge investment, as the Greenland ice melts away causing rising sea-levels, many of or coastal towns and cities could disappear under water.
Not a comfortable future really is it? Blisteringly hot summers and flash floods while our coastline moves slowly inland. Hopefully this will motivate everyone to make an effort to reduce their CO2 emissions as a matter of urgency. Climate change is happening now and can only get worse unless we all take it seriously and do our share.
