If you are a vegan chocolate lover, who is desperate to avoid consuming masses of sugar, Plamil Foods now offer chocolate bars with no added sugar. You can choose from plain chocolate or chocolate with shelled hemp seeds. These bars contain xylitol (from birch trees) in place of sugar and 60% cocoa. I have heard that xylitol can cause mild diarrhoea, but I am hoping that this is only in large doses, otherwise your tasty chocolate treat is going keep you on the loo for a week. In its favour, it is very good for your teeth.
If you are worried about the calories one teaspoon of xylitol contains 9.6 calories compared with 15 calories for sugar and it does not have such a significant impact on blood sugar levels as sugar. As far as taste goes, I have not tried one yet, but I am sure I will soon! Chocolate without the guilt sounds great!
