Nike in new anti-sweatshop crackdown

Notorious for its unhealthy obsession with cheap labour, Nike is said to be 'cracking down' on poor working conditions in its factories.

The sportswear giant has pledged to cut down on the amount of overtime carried out by workers in China and other parts of the far east, where unpaid overtime is common. In the company's annual corporate responsibility report, a drive to reduce "excessive" overtime at its 700 contract factories by 2011 was proposed, a move which would affect 800,000 workers. Nike gave details of all such factories for the first time in 2005 after claims of poor conditions at some plants. The firm has also set new targets for reducing waste and carbon emissions.
