Global warming affects mainland USA

dustbowl1.jpgThe USA is going through a rather dry spell at the moment, or more precisely it is experiencing the worst drought since the 1920’s. With scenes reminiscent from the great depression, the signs of rising global temperatures are manifesting all over the United States. In some states crops are failing due to reduced rainfall, in others vast lakes that act as reservoirs are less than half-full, and in some cases drying out, there are increasing incidences of forest fires, and there is less snow in some ski resorts. There are indicators of major climate changes in many parts of mainland USA. The signs are there, they are real and they are long-term.

Climatologists are saying that this is something that will get worse and could last for 100 years. This really puts into perspective the kind of language the Bush administration has been using over the last few years to deny global warming. I think it’s sort of ironic that the country that produces the most greenhouse gas emissions and whose government has been actively denying the very fact that human activity is contributing to rising global temperatures is now seeing the effects of their actions. Hopefully now that the impact of global warming is so close to home, president Bush will at long last take some kind of action to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, or he could carry on as normal and use the shovel provided by his friends in the oil companies to bury his head in the sand. Only time will tell.
