Dell looks forward to a greener future
Dell has recently announced its aim to become ‘the greenest technology company on Earth’. Dell are introducing a number of initiatives in this drive to go green. One of these initiatives is the Plant A Tree For Me scheme, where consumers pay £1 extra for laptops and £3 extra for desktop pc’s to part fund the planting of trees to offset the CO2 created by the electricity used by the laptop or desktop for a period of three years. The other aspects of Dell’s green policies are to reduce their carbon footprint by 15% by 2012 and to review their suppliers to ensure they too are following green practices. This will probably be the most difficult to achieve, as the cheapest manufacturers are usually located in developing countries, which at the moment have the most polluting industries as they try to develop rapidly.
In the increasingly competitive computer market, any advantage can be worth many millions of pounds in revenues. In today’s eco-reality, green sells. Good idea I say. More firms need to come up with initiatives to make themselves and their customers more planet-friendly. I’m sure people will generally be happy to pay a little extra if they know their money is being used to save the planet. This could be an excellent selling point for Dell.
