Asda launches compostable CD range throughout stores
It seems that Asda are attempting to boost their green credentials (yet again) by introducing fully compostable packaging for a range of their CDs. The initiative, in conjunction with Universal Music, sees more than 84,000 of their best selling discs available in 'Ecopac' packaging. This means instead of hard plastic cases and inners, the CDs come in 100% recycled paper foam, which is fully compostable, and can also be recycled alongside regular newspapers and magazines. In addition to this, no booklets are available with the CDs, instead you can download or browse them online at Universal Music's website. Research shows that over 25% of packaging is thrown out within the first 12 months of purchase. Over 2 million of the eco friendly CDs have been purchased in the US since their launch six months ago.

This is great news and a move i'd love to see stores like HMV and Virgin also follow.
i also think more needs to be done to raise awareness that Cds and cassettes can also be recycled, as millions probably end up on landfill when they could be recycled. You may find this article on music waste interesting:

I agree Ian, all CDs should come in this type of packaging. I actually had no idea people threw their cases out within 12 months. I've never chucked a case in my life and I have hundreds of CDs!! Thanks for the other info too. Interesting reading :)
