Wilkinet gives us its fairtrade baby carrier

wilkinet.jpg

Wilkinet has launched its first fairtrade cotton baby carrier using organic cotton from an Indian fairtrade co-operative. A string of eco-conscious baby carriers have made their way onto the market. The Wilkinet has an average price as babycarriers go, although you do pay a premium for the fairtrade fabric. What’s good about the Wilkinet is that it doesn’t fasten with Velcro, buckles, clips or any other annoyingly incarcerating device. So how does it work? It has a special wraparound design using straps which go across your back, through two loops and tie in front of you. This sounds promising, since I’ve been stuck in my baby carrier before and needed my wife to rescue me from its clutches.

The Wilkinet range of carries were originally designed by mother of eight, Sally Wilkins, to carry tiny 5lb newborns up to 25lb toddlers. It has four carrying positions and is also used and recommended by physiotherapists and osteopaths.
Sally says: “I’ve wanted to offer an organic fairtrade option for several years but until now many of the fabrics we’d been offered weren’t good enough to use for our baby carrier. With this new fabric we now know we can maintain our important quality standards for the carrier, while also supporting a community of dyers and weavers in an Indian fairtrade co-operative.”
You can buy the carrier direct from Wilkinet website for £47.95.
