Wi-Fi threat to health?

laptop1.jpgThe Government insists that phone masts and Wi-fi transmitters are perfectly safe. The Government uses data from the International Commission on NonIonizing Radiation Protection to set the safe limits of radiation exposure. The commission uses the thermal effect of the radiation as a benchmark for safety, i.e. if the radiation is strong enough to cause a rise in temperature then it will be deemed necessary to restrict exposure. Unfortunately the radiation has other effects on human cells beyond the heat effect.

Sir William Stewart, who is chairman of the Health Protection Agency, produced a report as far back as 2000 on the impact of mobile phone masts. He found that the radiation can cause changes in cognitive function, and there were indications that there may be cancer inductions, and molecular changes within cells. All this sounds worrying enough, but what has been found by the BBC’s Panorama programme, is that the measured radiation from a laptop at a Norwich school was three times that of a typical mobile phone mast. With so many schools and homes now using Wi-fi networks, are we risking our children’s and our health? Maybe the question should not be are risking our health but how seriously are we risking our health.
