The Chelsea Flower Show does eco
The Chelsea Flower Show opens to Royal Horticultural Society members tomorrow, but already it is making headlines. This is the first year that all the gardens will be either partially or fully recycled. In fact, not only were recycled materials used, but at the end of the show, the Amnesty International garden is to be relocated to the roof of Amnesty’s HQ in London.
There are plans for next year’s show to be even more eco-friendly. The organisers are planning to question all of the garden designers on the sources of their plants and the products used to grow them. It is hoped this will create greater awareness of the environmental impact of their garden designs.
The five-day event is the highlight of the gardening calendar and tickets have already sold out. This will be a fantastic showcase for the possibilities of recycling in the garden. With the large number of visitors and the comprehensive television coverage, there is huge scope for the recycling message to be heard. We should be looking for ways to re-use and recycle as much as we can.
