Stansted airport expansion threat to planet

ice1.jpgThere is a really interesting article in The Independent today about the effects of global warming on the Inuit community. A prominent leader of the Inuit community is due to speak at the public inquiry opening today into he proposed expansion of Stansted Airport. The groups fighting against the expansion are using global warming as their main argument against the expansion. Aqqaluk Lynge is an Inuit politician and head of the Inuit community in Greenland. He will speak out against the ‘cheap flights’ culture that is fuelling global warming. He will give details of the very real effects of global warming on his people.

Where to us global warming is a threat to the future, to the Inuit people the threat is very current. They are losing their land at an alarming rate. Their way of life is being devastated by factors beyond their control or influence. They are not contributing to global warming, but they are suffering because of it. Our way of life is threatening the entire planet and all of the people, plants and wildlife. We may not see or feel the effects now, but many others are. We too will feel the consequences in the near future if we do not act to address global warming now. This is something we all need to understand and act on.
