National Vegetarian Week 21st - 27th May 2007

veggie%20week.jpgAfter 18 years I fell off the vegetarian bandwagon when I became pregnant. I decided to eat our fishy friends, but still refuse to eat anything else with a face! I will, however, still celebrate National Vegetarian Week which takes place from 21st to 27th May. The event is in it's 15th year and is sponsored by genius veggie food manufacturers Cauldron Foods. There are many events taking place all over the country, including cookery demos, tasting sessions and talks on why becoming a veggie is not only great for your health but also for the planet. For instance, did you know that the methane gases which come from the derriere of UK livestock has 23 times the global warming impact of CO2? Or the fact that livestock production accounts for over 8% of global human water consumption? If you are already a vegetarian, or you are toying with the idea, National Vegetarian Week is the perfect time to find out more.

What made you decide to go pescatarian during your pregnancy, then? I'm aware that some women do this, but the idea would be out of the question for me. Do you have a problem with women who choose not to? And was there a specific reason (for you) why you thought your baby needed the extra fishiness? i guess it would make sense if you have some kind of aversion to taking omega 3 in other forms, but that seems unlikely, and can't see any other argument in favour of it.

...or did you actually just really really like fish and want to go back to eating it? ;)

I'm one of those vegetarians who gave up meat purely due to my love of animals, and when I got pregnant I began to crave salmon and tuna. I resisted for as long as I could then I gave in at around 7 months! My intention was to go back to being a fully pledged veggie after I gave birth, but I'm weak and I haven't made the step back :( My daughter eats fish, but doesn't eat meat & I will never give her any until she's old enough to pay for, and cook it herself!! In short, I don't believe anyone (pregnant or otherwise) needs meat or fish to be healthy. Maybe one day I'll have enough will power to give up fish again. One thing I know for sure...I'll NEVER eat any other type of animal!
