National Theatre turns the South Bank green

national%20theatre%20grass.jpgThe National Theatre on London's South Bank is about to go green - literally. For a few weeks now its Littleton fly tower has been concealed under a very large sheet, but this has now been removed to reveal that it's completely covered in grass.

The £50,000 installation is the work of artists Heather Akroyd and Dan Harvey, who first covered the 100-foot walls in clay then planted millions of seeds, which have now sprouted, and should remain green for about six weeks. The aim is to show the effects of decay and erosion on nature, simulating the effects of climate change on the planet as the grass turns yellow. “Climate change is this epic drama that’s unfolding before our eyes. Yet you still see people who have got their heads in the ever-warming sand,” Akroyd said.
