It seems like people will never stop arguing about organic food and its benefits (or lack of them) so for those of you spending that extra 10p on your milk, here's a quick pep-talk from Hippyshopper's Dawn Mellowship.
1) Organic products certified by the relevant bodies in your country (The Soil Association in the UK) are required to meet strict standards and as such should be free of toxic chemicals, pesticides, insecticides and other additives.
2) Organic food tastes superb. It really does. If you eat organic food for a while and then try going back to non-organic, you will be astonished at the difference in taste. Why eat substandard food?
3) Organic food is richer in nutrients. Non-organic food is cultivated with artificial fertilisers, which are lacking in essential minerals.
4) Organic products reduce health risks and protect the environment. Pesticides used on crops have been linked with: death of wildlife, residues in foods, water pollution, livestock deaths, environmental hazards, human poisonings, increased incidences of leukemia and birth defects in children and more. Plus organic farming bars the use of antibiotics and hormones in animal feed and protects animal farmers from constant exposure to chemicals and potentially harmful pesticides.
5) By buying organic you are encouraging manufacturers to re-think their strategies for producing products. The more people who buy organic and natural products, the more manufacturers will be forced to provide more of these natural goods.
