Pope Benedict at a Vatican conference urges those in power to “respect creation” as well as “focusing on the needs of sustainable development”.
The Catholic church is regarded as a traditionalist and conservative organisation. For such a major attitude shift to occur, the Vatican must have seen some compelling evidence of global warming.
The Catholic church has at last added its voice to that of other churches around the world in proclaiming that environmental abuse goes against God’s will. How this will translate into positive action by the one billion Catholics remains to be seen, but at least it is step in the right direction. The more people in the highest echelons of power that come out and say global warming is a real issue and is caused by human behaviour the better. It is in effect isolating those that deny global warming exists or those that say global warming is a natural phenomenon unaffected by human behaviour.
The fact that we all have a responsibility to protect the planet, and to use the planet’s resources wisely, is finally being taken seriously by political and church leaders worldwide, is an amazing step forward. The next step is for these leaders to not only talk about change but to actually create change. That’s where we as individuals have a responsibility to ensure our political leaders act accordingly.
