Doing my weekly 'big shop' this weekend, I think I counted two other people reusing carrier bags. And despite the racks of bags-for-life and notices on every aisle promising brownie points for bringing your own bag, I still had to fight the shop assistants' attempts to put my groceries in a plastic bag at the checkout.
So I was heartened to see that someone's started this online campaign to get more people into the habit of having a shopper-bag on them at all times. Carry on Carriers set weekly 'challenges' to readers, and have produced this lovely little video which I think should be a compulsory part of checkout training...
I always try to reuse my carriers. I work in a WH Smith shop and they have a campaign running, in association with the Woodland Trust, to save on carrier bags. We wear badges that read "Say No to a bag and YES to a tree!" I always ask if people want a bag but the amount of times people want one even if they just buy something small like a chocolate bar. Drives me mad but I can't say anything!
Bah...just had another one thrust on me in Tescos, so it's great to see there are some people in retail that don't take that attitude! It's getting ridiculous. I do like the idea of the 'Just say no!' campaign that Carry on Carriers are advocating though. Maybe you should have a badge saying something about it to wean your customers off their placky bag addiction?
