Fish stocks around the world are dwindling, so if you enjoy a fishy treat from time to time, you might want to be aware of which species are endangered before tucking in. But however much you love fish, this may not be the sort of information you carry around in your head, so here's a useful new resource you can consult to tell you how sustainable your fish is - even while you're out shopping!
Friend of the Sea is an established certification scheme for sustainable seafood, which now offers a text service to bring you 'real-time seafood environmental status information' in seconds - every time you consider buying fish. From the UK, you do this by entering the name of the species (e.g. 'cod') and sending it to 07781489880 by SMS. In the states it's far more memorable: simply text FISH before sending your query. However, local standard mobile phone SMS charges only apply wherever you're based.

Hi,
Here's something similar. Last year, for fun, I took the info about buying fish on http://www.fishonline.org and put it up on a site that could be read by mobiles (fishonline cannot).
See http://mobile.lonepilot.co.uk/
The Marine Consevation Society do publish a book with the info but I'd never remember to carry that around plus it needs updating from time to time. So mobile makes sense.
But it seems to me that rather than paying for a text this info should be free and easy to browse (you could end up sending tons of texts to a text service).
The only snag is that most people aren't on a unlimited mobile internet contract so you end up paying for it anyway. Still. If the MCS could get it together and do this properly it would be better that a text service.
