Hippyshopper is growing by the day, and now there's a small army of us on board, you can expect to see more green products and services being thoroughly put to the test by our eco-savvy reporters. We'll do our best to guide you through what's become a green consumer jungle, and would love to hear your feedback on what you want to see reviewed in future.

To kick off the series, we asked Hippyshopper writer Ben Keningale to send his experience of Riverford Organic. Riverford is one of the best known suppliers of organic 'veggie boxes' in the UK, and as one of the largest box delivery schemes, grows over 85 different vegetables. Here's what Ben made of the service.

Eden Project to host Sexy Green Car Show

focusffv.jpgWe've come a long way since the days of the Sinclair C5...nowadays, not only is it acceptable to mention the words 'sexy' and 'electric car' in the same sentence, but green cars are among the most desirable models around, with celebrities clamouring for 'a go' in the latest Tesla Roadster at the Oscars last weekend.

And now you can go and see the green machines in all their glory. The Eden Project is hosting the first Sexy Green Car Show from March 30th to April 15th...

Eco totes: Bag them before it's too late...

myer_1.jpgDemand for Anya Hindmarch's 'I'm not a plastic bag bag' has now reached critical mass, and I was quite frankly gutted to discover that pre-ordering has been put on hold due to overwhelming demand. There'll be more on sale in March, but in the meantime, we continue our roundup of the best of the rest eco bags, with an international flavour that shows the trend is taking hold worldwide...

First up, a green bag from down under. Created by Alex Perry and Tigerlily’s Jodhi Meares, Mygreenbag from Myer is available in two different designs, and come in two sizes. Shown on the left is Alex Perry modeling the black shopping tote, and on the right is the Tigerlily bag.

Next, Japanese kitsch-mongers Tokyo Jazz Panda are offering a range of predictably cute eco shopping bags, featuring pigs, dogs and froggies. And they're only £4.99...Oh my! Follow the jump for a look.

Carbon offsetting: Are you neutral?

Comments (1)

CN%20Icon%20Wind.jpgCarbon Neutral is very much in vogue, and it seems not a day goes by without another organisation announcing its intentions to offset emissions. It's a neat little concept that can make us feel better about our bad habits, and in itself, it's becoming big business.

But last week, the Carbon Neutral Company found to its cost that opinion is very much divided in the green community as to its validity. I'm curious to know Hippyshopper readers' opinions on this very current question...

Stand by for an energy-saving innovation

standby.jpgIt's all too easy to put your laptop on standby when you're working: you've got multiple tabs open, possibly some unsaved work and no time to sit patiently as the closedown music strikes up and each program laboriously shuts down. But doesn't standby waste a lot of energy?

Generally speaking, yes, putting your PC in standby is not a good move. In the UK alone we waste the equivalent of two power stations' worth of electricity each year just by leaving computers, TVs and other gadgets on standby. Which is why electrics firm NXP Semiconductors has designed a new energy-efficient chip for laptops, which reduces power consumption when the computer is put in standby mode.

Fairtrade Fortnight: Tam & Rob launch new range

Comments (1)

tamrob.JPGTam & Rob are a funky, London-based design duo who make clothes for people who want to buy fairtrade, but don't go in for baggy hemp jumpers and tie-dyed XXL pantaloons - which always comes as a relief, don't you find?

To celebrate Fairtrade Fortnight, they've offered us a sneak preview of their Spring/Summer 07 range, available to buy shortly. The nine piece capsule collection is priced between £15 and £110 and includes a jersey top that takes its cue from Spring’s volume trend and is available in white or blue at £40. For retro fans there's also a '40s influenced wrap dress at £85, made entirely from hand woven organic cotton. All items are made under accredited fairtrade conditions in India and Nepal.

Crap at the environment? Then read on...

crap.jpgComedian Mark Watson is 'crap at the environment'. Or so he'd have us believe; I think he's being pretty modest, having heard about his efforts to start a movement for people who are 'concerned about climate change and environmental damage, yet, until now, have been completely or fairly shit at doing anything about it.'

In his attempt to 'remove the tedium from green issues and replace them with Fun' (I like that capital 'F'), Watson has started up a Myspace page with all sorts of tomfoolery devoted to saving the planet.

Don't waste water - have a shower.

Comments (1)

shower_head.jpgWhen it comes to being green, I have to admit that baths are my downfall. So I decided to look into just how much water I was using, whether it really was such a sin (are power showers any better?), and how I could green up my daily wash. Pay attention, bath people!

Fronting a campaign to stop us wasting water in the bathroom is globetrotter Ben Fogle (now there's someone I wouldn't kick out of the shower), who has experienced first-hand the reality of living without abundant water. Along with DIY bods B&Q he's come up with a list of water-saving tips - and they don't all involve foregoing the bathtub. Follow the jump to see how you could save water around the house. It's all about the small things: fixing that dripping tap could save up to 20 litres of water per day...

Good call from Amnesty International: Donate by phone

Amnesty%20Logo.JPG
Human rights charity Amnesty International has announced a new service that will allow members to donate funds using a mobile phone.

The new payment system, which allows donations of up to £800, was carefully chosen by Amnesty, which has traditionally been a bit tech-shy.
