'400 sheep saved' by knitwear label
Each year, for such minor crimes as being male, missing a pregnancy, being lame, being small, being old or having imperfections such as a black spot on a white fleece, otherwise healthy sheep are sent to the slaughter. Baa-baric! But new luxury knitwear label Izzy Lane has come to the rescue, preventing over 400 of these woolly misfits becoming mutton in 2006 alone.
Founder Isobel Davies, a long-standing vegetarian and animal lover, has created a sanctuary for her Wensleydale sheep (for the non-experts among us, that's the sort that look a bit like walking dreadlocks), and uses their wool to create lustrous garments for men and women, in a range of stylish seasonal colours. There is also a range of cashmere items. With a strong, ethically-conscious design team on board, and the growing public consciousness on ethical clothing, I'm willing to bet this label will save even more sheep in 2007!
