Is global warming such a politicized issue that scientists, supposedly impartial truth-seekers, have to grow old and die (presumably without help off the mortal coil) before there can be real progress on the issue? So saith James Hansen of NASA Institute for Space Studies in New York City. The problem is that science is supposed to involve dispute - challenge makes theories stronger and moves them closer to fact. An unchallenged theory is untested. But at what point can there be said to be reasonable consensus? No solutions offered, but an interesting variety of viewpoints. [GT]
