Los Angeles urban farm bulldozed

The South Central LA organic farm that Daryl Hannah vlogged about and which Joan Baez tree-sat to save has been bulldozed.  The mayor tried to broker a deal between the land's owner, Ralph Horowitz, and the Trust for Public Land and the Annenberg Foundation, but Horowitz refused, apparently partly because he wasn't keen on the anti-Semitic cracks some of the protesters were making. (Nice example of how one bad apple can spoil a whole barrel.)

Horowitz is already making $16 mil on a $5 mil investment, so that $11 mil should go pretty far to salve his injured dignity.  On the other hand, surely for $16 mil the Trust for Public Land et al could buy quite a bit more than 14 acres.  It might not be in downtown Los Angeles, but you know what?  People move.  They go where they work is.  They'd go where the food was too. There's a serious risk here of losing sight of the big picture - getting hysterical about one - very nice, sure - but still just one - fairly small parcel of land. Buy more instead. [GT]
