Logmaker, Logmaker, get me a match

Logmaker_closeup_1

The original Logmaker (£30 from the Centre for Alternative Technology) is a device not unlike an oversized home cigarette roller for turning newspapers into firebox fuel.  You soak the newspapers, put them in the mold, flip the levers to compress them into a tight log shape, and allow to dry completely.  An excellent gadget if you're a heavy newspaper consumer - the ex-Mr Taylor used to generate about a footlocker's worth of paper trash a week - but a tad on the inconvenient side.

Enter the New Logmaker, cheaper, easier, and more versatile.

£19.95 from ProEco, the New Logmaker takes newspaper, plus "junk mail, confidential paperwork, shredded paper, wrapping paper, cardboad, card packaging, dry leaves, wood chips, twigs and sticks, even dried tea bags, and other types of domestic and garden waste".  They also suggest you "crumble a stick of cinnamon or favourite spice into your logs prior to burning to release a pleasing and natural aroma into your room."  But the big thing is, no more soaking and drying - just make a fuel log and use it on the spot.  So next time you have a romantic evening by the fire, pop for the New Logmaker and make it an ethical romance.
