Yesterday we mentioned Daryl Hannah's new vlog, and that she had an emergency bulletin about how an organic garden in LA was about to be bulldozed. Well, it's on hold now, however temporarily, because folk icon Joan Baez is now living in a tree inside it.
"I don't know how long I'll be here," Baez said. "I'm not pretending this is a long tree sit."
"It's kind of shocking that most people in this city don't know that the largest urban farm in the country is in South Central L.A. -- and that it's about to be bulldozed," Hannah said in an interview with CTV's Graham Richardson.
The farm currently supports a whopping 350 families, mostly Central American immigrants. "This is just like a Garden of Eden," Hannah said. "There's banana trees, peach trees and heirloom varieties of all different kinds of fruits and vegetables, and children playing around without being afraid of being shot -- that just doesn't happen here."
The land was sold by the city, for $5 million, so a warehouse could be constructed on the garden's carcass. The new owners want $16.35 million, and the Trust for Public Land only has six and a half. What a land flip! [GT]
