Suppose some evil dictator aimed a death ray at the planet and threatened to carve his entire family tree into it, one flaming ten-mile long letter at a time, unless you, dear reader, smoked one cigar or cigarette. To save humanity, you might have to have that smoke. It is against that possibility (and not, say, because occasionally us poor sinners have an overwhelming craving after we've had one too many gimlets [made, I assure you, with UK 5]).
Well then, consider the VitaCig. It's only available in Quebec, Canada, right now, and probably costs around $10-$15 CAD a pack. It was invented by Roger Ouellette for his wife, Gisele, and supposedly doesn't stain teeth, stinks less, and has vitamin C and some other vitamins. Health Canada is maybe not so impressed as Mrs Ouellette, who is reportedly delighted that she now doesn't have to quit smoking.
Word is that American Spirit cigarettes are safer in the sense that they're organic, and don't have all that gungy benzene in them. I don't have any personal experience aside from hangin' out at Circle K in Oregon with my to-be-ex-husband and our then-mutual-best-friend (weirdly, I'm now on great terms with the ex-husband but neither of us speak to the friend - but I digress). Young man came in to buy American Spirit, and declaimed that his reason was that they are "non-addictive". No. Then-friend pointed out that what the pack says is, "No Additives". Not the same.
But why go with cigarettes when you can have a fair-trade organic cigar, a Puros Don Remo? It's Mexican, but it's surprisingly smooth. Given the moderate price - you can get them at some American convenience stores, or order them online from Don Remo directly (though they require quite a sizeable order so you might need to get together with a friend or ten) - they're terrific value. Very mild, flavorful, sweet smokes. But the best offering is the Don Remo Puritos, which are an apertif petit style cigar made from the same materials as a full cigar, and therefore having all the flavour. If you're a very occasional smoker, why not splurge on something that's both healthier (to the degree that tobacco can be healthier - okay, tobacco's bad, but tobacco plus benzene is indubitably worse) and tastier to boot.
