Sesamin is an all-natural component stored in sesame seeds. Its content is only about 0.5 percent. Through extracting sesamin from sesame, and experimenting in animals and humans, the Japanese scientific researchers have discovered that sesamin has effects of preventing hypertension and cardiovascular hypertrophy, protecting liver, resisting oxidation, reducing cholesterol, and anti-cancer .

Effect of sesamin, a sesame lignan, on the hepatic fatty acid metabolism was examined in the rat.
Increase of the dietary level of sesamin progressively increased the mitochondrial and peroxisomal
fatty acid oxidation rate. Mitochondrial activity almost doubled in rats fed a 0.5% sesamin diet. Peroxisomal
activity became more than 10 times higher in rats fed a 0.5% sesamin diet, compared to those
fed a sesamin-free diet. Dietary sesamin also markedly increased the hepatic activity and mRNA levels
of various fatty acid oxidation enzymes. In contrast, dietary sesamin decreased the hepatic activity
and mRNA abundance of lipogenic enzymes. This was associated with the down-regulation of sterol
regulatory element-binding protein-1, a transcriptional factor that regulates the lipogenic enzyme gene
expression. Dietary sesamin significantly decreased the triacylglycerol secretion accompanying the
increase in ketone body production by the perfused rat liver. It is apparent that sesamin affects the fatty
acid metabolism and lipoprotein production in the liver, and hence lowers the serum lipid levels. We
also developed several sesame lines with seeds containing sesamin and sesamolin at twice the concentration
of conventional cultivars. Compared to a conventional cultivar, these lignan-rich sesame seeds
increased the hepatic fatty acid oxidation rate and lowered the serum triacylglycerol level in the rat.
Therefore, it is considered that enrichment of the lignans potentiates the characteristics of sesame in
improving human health.

Sesamin, one of the lignans present most abundantly
in sesame seed and oil (Fig. 1), markedly influences the
lipid metabolism in experimental animals. Sesamin feeding
is associated with a reduction of serum lipid levels in
rodents7,8,22. This compound is also effective in preventing
an increase in the serum triacylglycerol level following
ethanol consumption in the rat1. The cholesterollowering
effect of sesamin has also been demonstrated in humans6. However, the mechanism(s) underlying the
lipid-lowering effect of sesamin remains to be clarified.
The changes in the rate of fatty acid synthesis and oxidation
in the liver may possibly modify serum lipid concentrations.
Alterations in fatty acid synthesis25 and
oxidation10,11 which affect the availability of fatty acids
for triacylglycerol synthesis, and in turn modify the very
low density lipoprotein production by the liver, may
affect the serum lipid levels. In this context, we examined
the physiological activity of sesamin in relation to
the hepatic fatty acid metabolism in the rat.

Very recently, it was reported that Huzhang extract is one of the best active-oxygen scavengers for the prevention of skin aging induced by UV-irradiation and free radical. Experiments conducted in vivo indicate that resveratrol is a potent vasodilator and inhibitor of platelet aggregation. Recent work in dogs and humans indicate that other concentrated sources of resveratrol (i.e., red wine and grape juice) eliminate cyclic blood-flow reductions caused by platelet-mediated thrombosis.

Active Compounds:
Huzhang is characterized by anthraquinones and their glycosides, napthoquinone, 3,5,4¡Â-trihydroxy stilbene (i.e., resveratrol), piceid, fallacinol, citreorosein, questin, questinol, protocatechuic acid, (+) catechin, 2,5-dimethyl-7- hydroxychromone, 7-hydroxy-4-methoxy-5-methylcoumarin, flavonols, polysaccharides, and condensed tannins.

Regulatory Status:
Under U.S. law, huzhang extract is regulated as a dietary supplement. As of this writing, no European governments had issued monographs or regulations for nutraceutical uses of huzhang. NOTE: The statements in this publication have not been evaluated by the FDA.

What Is It?

Cascara sagrada is a natural laxative made from the reddish-brown bark of a tree (Rhamnus purshiana) native to the Pacific Northwest. It was used by various Native American tribes, who also passed their "sacred bark" on to Spanish explorers (cascara sagrada means sacred bark in Spanish).

Aging is essential because the fresh bark is very irritating to the gastrointestinal system, causing vomiting and intestinal spasms.

Cascara sagrada is recognized as safe and effective by the Food and Drug Administration. It appears in the national formularies of most countries, and has been in the United States Pharmacopoeia since 1890.

Health Benefits

There have been a limited number of clinical trials on cascara sagrada that have explored its value for cleansing the colon before bowel examinations and similar diagnostic tests. Its value is clear for easing constipation--when it's taken properly and at a safe dosage. In fact, cascara is such a mild laxative that it can safely be used by the elderly, and for the mild constipation that can occur following anal or rectal surgery.

Specifically, cascara sagrada may help to:

Control occasional constipation. Early plant chemists identified the active laxative constituents in cascara sagrada bark: anthraquinone derivatives. These compounds stimulate peristalsis, the vigorous wavelike contractions of the large intestine that keep food moving through the digestive system. When cascara speeds the process up, the body produces a softer, quicker bowel movement because the intestine has had less chance to absorb the liquid from the stool. Several studies have shown that cascara sagrada is effective in easing chronic constipation in elderly people.

Treat hemorrhoids and anal fissures. Combined with conventional measures to soften the stool (plenty of dietary fiber, water, and exercise), occasional use of cascara sagrada preparations makes sense for preventing the pressure and pain associated with hemorrhoids and anal fissures (cracks in the skin near the anus). In fact, by speeding up bowel movements, hemorrhoids are also less likely to develop.

Dosage Information

Special tips:

--A bowel movement should take place within six to eight hours of taking a typically recommended dose of cascara sagrada.

--Always start with the lowest dose; individual responses to laxatives vary considerably.

--Be sure to drink plenty of water when using any laxative.

For constipation and related discomforts such as hemorrhoids: 1 teapoon of liquid extract three times a day or 1 or 2 teaspoons at bedtime; or 1 or 2 capsules of dried bark at bedtime.

Guidelines for Use

Cascara sagrada is quite bitter to the taste and if it's used in a liquid form (as a tea or liquid extract in water), it will require a sweetener. For this reason, some people simply prefer using the herb in tablet or capsule form.

General Interaction

Long-term use of any laxative, including cascara sagrada, can lead to a potassium deficiency. A low potassium level in the body can potentiate (increase) the effect of digitalis drugs and cause dangerous heart beat irregularities. For this reason, you should avoid using cascara with other drugs that lower potassium, such as diuretics ("water pills") and corticosteroids.
Possible Side Effects

Because long-term use of any laxative can make your body lose critical fluids and salts (especially potassium) and lead to chronic diarrhea or weakness, limit your use of cascara sagrada to one or two weeks. Habitual use of cascara sagrada can cause dependence on laxatives.

Some people develop crampy gastrointestinal discomforts with cascara sagrada; lower your dose if this happens and stop taking it altogether if the uncomfortable sensation persists.

Cautions

Don't use cascara sagrada continuously for more than two weeks.

See your doctor if constipation lasts for more than one week.

Never ingest fresh cascara bark, which is extremely irritating and can cause severe vomiting. The bark must be stored for a year or more and be specially treated before it's safe to use. Instead, stick with standardized commercial cascara products (capsules, tablets, powders).

Avoid cascara sagrada if you have an inflammatory bowel disease, such as Crohn's disease or ulcerative colitis, or if your doctor has diagnosed an intestinal obstruction of any kind.

What is the Giant Knotweed Extract?
Giant knotweed is an east Asian species (Polygonum cuspidatum), belonging to the Polygonaceae family. What is Guarana extract?
Guarana is a herbal stimulant that contains a form of caffeine called guaranine, which is 2.5 times stronger than the caffeine found in coffee, tea and soft drinks.

What is the Soy bean Extract?
