How not to kill your herbs (the self-watering way)

BillymontageMaybe I've just had an spectacularly bad eight year long run, but supermarket herbs are generally rubbish. The answer, of course, is to go DIY and grow your own. Simple if you're organised and can remember to water them. Not so simple if watering the coriander is bottom of your daily to-do list. Enter the Billy, a plastic water holder that you hide at the bottom of your pot and fill once a week via a discreet little pipe. The wonders of capillary action do the rest and you get food mile-free herbs that are fresher and far cheaper than the supermarket ones. The Billies start at £4 from Tricor. You can buy a whole lotta cheap herb seeds from Mr Fothergill's, which I've found reliable in the past.
