According to the clever folk at DEFRA, if we all boiled the right amount of water for a cuppa instead of filling the entire kettle, we'd save enough electricity to power most of the UK's street lights. So a warm welcome and a pack of Ginger Nuts to the Eco Kettle, which helps you boil precisely the right amount. I know what you're thinking. Measuring windows aren't new. The crucial difference with this one, however, is that it has two compartments, one for boiling and one that acts as a 1.5 litre resevoir. So rather than mucking around pouring water in and out to get the right level - thus wasting water - you can just press a button to release a cup's worth for boiling. £40 from The Insight Eco Store in Brighton.

I know you brits are all for weird measurement units, but honestly, "more than three quarters of the street lighting in the country" is one of the fuzziest measurements in a while. I know it's not too hard to calculate the energy impact yourself, but it would be nice to provide some bit clearer numbers anyway.
I thought that you just had to fill your cup with water, then pour the water into the kettle and voila. Right amount (or put a bit more to compensated for evaporation).
this is a great idea, but if you're at all concerned about the environment, you're probably also concerned about plastic from the container sneaking into your food. i don't think it's smart to have boiling water in a plastic container - it makes the plastic that much more likely to leach into your water. i was about to buy this, but then saw this post http://selfsufficientish.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=23992&
can they make a stainless steeel and glass eco kettle? now, that would be truly eco-friendly!
