Save water, world, money

Interflush2_1As veteran eco warriors will attest, there are lots of ways to cut down on water wasted by flushing toilets. Some are elaborate (building a cess pit under your house), some are eccentric (the Aussie mantra of "if it's brown, flush it down; if it's yellow, let it mellow") and are some are simply cheap and cheerful. As the astute will have correctly anticipated, the Interflush falls into the last camp. The idea is basic but brilliant - it's basically a fit-it-yourself plastic mechanism that goes in your toilet's cistern and causes a flush to only last as long as you hold the handle down. Interflush reckons you'll use 47% less water. At £20 including P&P, I reckon it's cheap enough to try for yourself.

Nice one!

A free way to achieve the same result is to put a brick in the cistern...not as cool...but it is free. For more info:

Hi all,

Penney Poyzer who Hippy Shopper has just featured in their "No Waste Like Home" article, has redirected her rainwater to fill up a tank that she then uses for loo flushing and the washing machine....now there's a good idea if ever I heard one...

I doubt anybody here would dispute the need to conserve water but this product is a prime example of over engineering.

As mentioned by a previous poster a much simpler solution to water preservation is the 'toilet brick'.

Have you heard about Mecon?

Latest water saving technology.

Simple to fit

Cost effective

Money back on water saving in 3 months

www.meconwml.com

The Mecon Water Saver is a new product which can be fitted in your toilet in less than 5 minutes to convert the toilet from a fixed flush to a variable flush toilet putting you in charge of water usage.

The product is new and we only started marketing it this year in England. We promoted the Mecon Water Saver at the Waterwise conference in Oxford and recently at the Water Festivals in Arundel West Sussex and the Hampshire Water Festival in Romsey.

The Mecon Water Saver was used in a joint trial carried out by the environment Agency and Southern Water To establish how much water can be saved.

£67 000 was spent on this joint trial to establish the potential water saving by Using Retrofit Water Saving Devices to save water in toilets.

The water savings that can be achieved with these devices is well documented by the Environment Agency through its partnership work with water companies accross the south east of England.

Following the initial trials carried out by Southern Water and the Environment Agency more extensive trials were carried out accross the South East of England with 10 Water companies including Southern Water and Anglian Water.

It is now generally accepted that Devices like the Mecon Water Saver save on average between 8% to 10% househole water (50% toilet flushing water)

While the average is 8% to 10%, individual householders can save much more than this. Schools which we spoke about can save 25% to 30% of their water.
