Green ISPs & moments of fame

Dell_xpsI'm enjoying my moment in the sun this morning after having been kindly featured in both  The Register and The Guardian. As well as writing a very nice piece on Hippyshopper, The Reg also raises the - embarrassingly pertinent - question of how ethical it is to own a computer and spend lots of time on the web. So far as I know, there's no such thing as a genuinely green computer, but there are ethical ISPs out there - namely GreenNet and Surefish. GreenNet's not exactly competitively priced at £25 for 512kbps - surely that should be 1MB for that price, guys? - but it is "dedicated to... working for peace, human rights and the environment." Surefish is a fraction more reasonable at £23.50 for 512, gives all its profits to Christian Aid and will only work with outfits that have a clean ethical record. (As regards the pic, I know the XPS isn't the most eco-friendly PC you can buy. I chose it because it looks shiny, though Dell do have a green pledge here.)

It is true that the components of a PC are not likely to be green for a long time but you can get a more efficent pc. a mini-itx computer only uses about 40 Watts of power where as a traditional high end computer can use more than 100.
